Listen to a very Up Close And Personal Interview with fashion photographer Bruce Smith, a published international fashion photography veteran with a career spanning nearly 40 years and the fashion editor of Inspo Fashion Magazine, Jurga.
When Bruce first started out as a fashion photographer he borrowed some fifties style ball gowns, initially for a test fashion photography shoot from a top fashion designer Helen Anderson Couture who sold her gowns through several exclusive London stores like Harrod's.
Bruce presented her with some samples of his fashion and fine art photography images and such was the impact of these images on the designer she commissioned Bruce to shoot her next three major fashion collections.
So what started out as a request for some gowns to photograph as a fashion photography test shoot, it became a paid assignment that was a published spread fashion story in one of the UK’s leading fashion magazines at the time, ‘Avant Guard’;
The recognition of his talent set Bruce off on a journey that has so far spanned over 30 years. Confident and adventurous he developed his own unique fashion photography style plus his technical abilities of working with available light as well as artificial flash and continuous lighting.
Bruce built a reputation for creating stylish, ‘classic’ images for his couture and bridal wear clients in Paris and London in the early 1980s.
Inspired by the great fashion photographers from the decades past, such as Cecil Beaton, Norman Parkinson, David Bailey, Barry Lategan, Horst P. Horst, Irving Penn and Richard Avedon etc.
So, like many other successful fashion photographers, Bruce Smith achieved his first big break in the fashion photography business by setting up a test fashion photography shoot with a model.
The next big break followed soon after. Catherine Raynor, a leading UK bridal wear couture designer, who had previously worked with such iconic photographers as Norman Parkinson, Terrance Donavan and John Swanell, commissioned Bruce to photograph her next couture fashion collection.
Catherine's status within the bridal wear industry, and the success of the images that he had produced for her, created a chain reaction which brought a queue of top bridal wear and couture designers to his studio door to shoot their collections.
By now, Bruce was becoming established as a leading high fashion photographer in London and Paris.
A commission from a leading bridal wear consumer magazine to shoot two fashion editorial stories on location in Tobago led to many years of shooting high fashion for some of the top designers and manufacturers of couture and bridal wear, including Margaret Lee, Lyn Ashworth and Eleni Costi.
Bruce’s classic fashion images inspired a long list of lingerie, hosiery and swim-wear commissions from brands including, Charnos, Lapel, Silhouette, Miss Kini and Panache plus many more.
Shooting advertising fashion photography ad campaigns, image brochures, look books and catalogues, producing fashion shoots in some of the world most beautiful and exotic locations from Alaska to Kenya.
Bruce has produced shoots in the major fashion cities like London, Paris, New York and Milan.
Bruce had by now learned to arrange complete production for major fashion shoots, from the sourcing of the production teams, stylists, hair and make up artists, models, location managers, catering, location transport.
Bruce has even had to find helicopters to fly teams of dogs and dog sleds up onto glaziers and find Arctic supply vessels.
Bruce can manage all of the necessary elements of high calibre fashion shoots.
Shooting on location, with all of its challenges, taught Bruce to shoot fast with available light and use all of the necessary skills to create successful fashion images for advertising campaigns and editorial fashion stories.
The latest significant direction in Bruce’s career came when one of his long-term clients suggested that he should consider sharing his knowledge with others.
This suggestion prompted the launch of The Bruce Smith Photography Academy that run courses mainly in fashion photography as well as portraiture, fine art nudes, fashion nudes, boudoir portraiture, these run over one to five days either in the studio or out on location, from London to Paris, Milan to Miami and other locations around the globe.
Bruce’s continued success in the digital fashion photography era led to the commissioning and completion of his comprehensive book, a practical guide to fashion photography business, which was published on both sides of the Atlantic. Pro Digital Fashion Photography (UK version) and Fashion Photography A complete Guide (USA version). He is working on several new titles at the moment. See the Blog for more information.
For his personal projects Bruce produces fine art fashion and nudes images for which he will have his first limited edition collection of fine art fashion images launched through his art agent in June 2015 soon to be an exhibition starting off in Monaco very soon.
Along with plans for the publishing of several fine art books to follow his book printed version of Black and White Plus A Little Bit Of Colour available as a high quality hard or soft backed printed books and as an iBook at Bruce's Blurb Books store as well as at the Apple iBook store.
