About  Bruce Smith Fashion Photography Production.

Getting started as a professional fashion photographer and fashion photography shoot producer

When Bruce first started out as a fashion photographer he borrowed some fifties style ball gowns, initially for a test fashion photography shoot from a top fashion designer Helen Anderson Couture who sold her gowns through several exclusive London stores like Harrod's. A fashion photography test shoot became a paid assignment

Bruce presented her with some samples of his fashion and fine art photography images and such was the impact of these images on the designer she commissioned Bruce to shoot her next three major fashion collections. So what started out as a request for some gowns to photograph as a fashion photography test shoot, it became a paid assignment that was a published spread fashion story in one of the UK’s leading fashion magazines at the time, ‘Avant Guard’;

Developing your unique style of fashion photography

The recognition of his talent set Bruce off on a journey that has so far spanned over 30 years. Confident and adventurous he developed his own unique fashion photography style plus his technical abilities of working with available light as well as artificial flash and continuous lighting. Bruce built a reputation for creating stylish, ‘classic’ images for his couture and bridal wear clients in Paris and London in the early 1980s.

We all need to be inspired and to inspire other fashion photographers. Inspired by the great fashion photographers from the decades past, such as Cecil Beaton, Norman Parkinson, David Bailey, Barry Lategan, Horst P. Horst, Irving Penn and Richard Avedon etc. So, like many other successful fashion photographers, Bruce Smith achieved his first big break in the fashion photography business by setting up a test fashion photography shoot with a model.

The next big break followed soon after. Catherine Raynor, a leading UK bridal wear couture designer, who had previously worked with such iconic photographers as Norman Parkinson, Terrance Donavan and John Swanell, commissioned Bruce to photograph her next couture fashion collection. Catherine's status within the bridal wear industry, and the success of the images that he had produced for her, created a chain reaction which brought a queue of top bridal wear and couture designers to his studio door to shoot their collections.

Becoming an established professional fashion photographer

By now, Bruce was becoming established as a leading high fashion photographer in London and Paris. A commission from a leading bridal wear consumer magazine to shoot two fashion editorial stories on location in Tobago led to many years of shooting high fashion for some of the top designers and manufacturers of couture and bridal wear, including Margaret Lee, Lyn Ashworth and Eleni Costi. Bruce’s classic fashion images inspired a long list of lingerie, hosiery and swimwear commissions from brands including, Charnos, Lapel, Silhouette, Miss Kini and Panache plus many more.
